Inmate Visitation

Harris County Jail facilities are resuming in-person visitations in a limited capacity, starting Tuesday, March 29th, 2022. In-person visitation had been suspended at jails across Texas because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Attorney-client interviews and other essential visits will not be affected. Family and friends can continue to communicate with their loved ones through calls and video visitations.

To ensure the public's safety, including the well-being of everyone working and residing inside the Harris County Jail, the visitation plan follows the guidance and approval of local public health authorities and the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

Visits will be scheduled according to the corresponding facility, day, and floor. Visitors must register here prior to their visit. The scheduling platform allows residents to plan a visit up to seven days in advance. On-site registration will be available for those who arrive at a facility without an appointment, however visitation is not guaranteed due to facility limitations and public health protocols.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Sheriff’s Office employees have worked diligently to maintain a high level of public service and care, implementing necessary public health measures.

To ensure the public’s safety, including the well-being of those working and residing inside the state’s largest jail, the visitation plan follows the guidance of public health officials.

Visitation is a privilege. Visits may be denied, revoked, or limited when the visit would threaten the safety, security, or good order of the facility, or when visitation rules are not followed. Visitation privileges may be suspended or terminated for inappropriate behavior or misuse of the visitation system. Except for privileged visits, visitation will be monitored by detention personnel. It is a criminal act for a person to provide or possess with the intent to provide an inmate a prohibited substance or item (Texas Penal Code 38.11).

  • Visitors must register via the new scheduling application here or upon their arrival at a Harris County jail facility.
  • After registering, a visit may be scheduled according to the corresponding facility, day, and floor up to seven days in advance.
  • If a requested visit date is unavailable, it may be due to an incarcerated person’s restrictions or loss of their visiting privileges, a person being quarantined, or a visit already scheduled.
  • A printed confirmation (e-mail notification) is required for visitation. If you’re unable to print the confirmation before visiting, one can be printed for you at the Visitor Control Center.
  • All visitors must be 17 years of age or older and must have a valid state or federal ID card or driver’s license with a photograph. One person is allowed to visit.
  • Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled visit time for ID verification.
  • Visitation begins by entering the main lobby of the jail where the person is housed.
  • Visits will be 20 minutes in duration, allowing time between visits for proper sanitation.
  • Every visitor will be required to pass an electronic temperature screening and wear a mask inside Harris County buildings. You will receive a printed badge.
  • We encourage social distancing during your scheduled visit.
  • Scheduled visits may be canceled at the incarcerated person’s request or due to facility limitations. If a scheduled visit is canceled, you will receive an e-mail notification.
  • Attorneys may visit inmates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • No minister visits will be allowed at any jail location from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
  • No video or audio recordings are permitted.
  • Up to two children (16 yrs. or younger) are allowed to visit with approved adult visitor.
  • All identification shall have a photo permanently affixed and shall not exhibit any signs of alteration or tampering.
  • Any valid driver’s license or identification card issued from any U.S. state.
  • Expired driver's license or identification card may be used if it is accompanied by a valid Texas Department of Public Safety (Texas DPS) temporary permit or renewal slip. NOTE: Texas DPS renewal slips and temporary permits are only valid with a credible photo ID in support of the renewal certificate (Credible photo ID is at the discretion of the on-duty Operations Section Supervisor and should be scrutinized carefully).

  • Official Consulate identification cards issued by the following countries or their Consular Offices
    •  Mexico (May be referred to as a Matricular Consular card)
    •  Guatemala
  • Foreign Nationals

    •  I-94 authorization to travel inside the border beyond 25 miles and 72 hours

  • There are storage lockers in the lobby. Visitors are not allowed to possess any items, except for the storage locker key, when visiting an inmate.
  • All items, including purses, wallets, bags, mobile phones, recording devices, writing instruments, weapons, etc., are prohibited.
  • No food or drinks allowed.
  • No packages, mail, or photographs may be left for an inmate.
  • Visitors must abide by the dress code or visitation will be denied.
  • No revealing and/or see-through clothing.
  • No sleeves shorter than halfway down the upper arm.
  • No spandex or tights without shorts/skirt.
  • No dress/skirts/shorts above mid-thigh.
  • No clothing displaying obscene or offensive language, drawings or gang affiliation.

Once a video visit is scheduled, attorneys shall cancel the visit if it is later determined that the video visit will not be necessary. Presently, there will be no charges for appointments made for attorney/client video visitation sessions.
    Visitation time duration: Video visits are scheduled in 20 minute blocks, and a scheduled attorney visit may not exceed 40 minutes per inmate daily.
    To avoid potential delays, attorneys are encouraged to not schedule visits to begin between 1:30 and 3:00 pm due to staff shift change.
