On Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at approximately 1345 hrs, Detention Officer Dionicio Camacho suffered a sudden and fatal heart attack. Detention Officer Camacho collapsed after completing a defensive tactics training evolution during the Basic County Corrections Course. He had just finished five minutes of running and was in a simulated fight with an instructor when he suddenly collapsed. Paramedics were called and valiant efforts were immediately made to try and resuscitate him by the use of CPR, but he remained unresponsive. Detention Officer Camacho was transported to a local hospital where he remained on life support for two days before passing away. Detention Officer Dionicio Camacho had served with the Harris County Sheriff’s office for only four months before this tragedy. Camacho, a former US Marine, left behind a wife and son. Detention Officer Dionicio Camacho was the 37th to die in the line of duty.
