On Thursday, September 23, 1965, Deputy Fred Barkow Peebles, assigned to the Motorcycle Division, was off duty escorting a funeral procession to supplement his $460.00 a month salary. As the procession neared the 6200 block of the Eastex Freeway near the North Loop, Deputy Peebles stopped his motorcycle to direct traffic in order to allow the procession to enter the freeway. While he was directing traffic, a car that was traveling north on the Eastex Freeway at a high rate of speed began passing the funeral procession. When the speeding car passed the procession it struck Deputy Peebles and his motorcycle. Deputy Peebles suffered massive head and eternal injuries. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Ben Taub Hospital. The 18 year-old suspect driving the vehicle abandoned the car and stumbled over the guardrail to flee the scene. A witness to the accident saw the suspect trying to flee and went after him. While trying to run, the suspect fell into a ditch. The witness attempted to detain the suspect, but the suspect pulled a knife and threatened to kill him. The witness allowed the suspect to leave, but was able to maintain visual contact with him long enough to alert police. A Houston Police Motorcycle Officer pursued the suspect and arrested him without incident in the 3200 block of Bennington Street. The suspect was placed in the county jail and charged with Murder by Auto and Failure to Stop and Render Aid. Fred Barkow Peebles was born in Houston, Texas on January 8, 1935 to his parents, Theo Barnes Peebles and Eloise Peebles. He was married to Bobbie Peebles. He and his wife had one son by the name of Michael, one daughter named Holly, and one stepson named David Tynson. He had also served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Deputy Peebles joined the Harris County Sheriff’s Department on February 26, 1960 as a motorcycle officer and served in that capacity for five years before his death. Deputy Peebles was 30 years old at the time of his death and the 10th deputy to die in the line of duty.
