On Monday, February 2, 1987, Deputy Haskell McCoy was going home after attending firearms qualifications at the Sheriff’s Department Firing Range. As Deputy McCoy was traveling south in the 15000 block of the Eastex Freeway service road, his vehicle was struck head-on by a vehicle driving the wrong way. Both Deputy McCoy and the operator of the other vehicle were killed instantly. Deputy McCoy was 64 years old at the time of his death and the 19th deputy to die in the line of duty.
