On September 27, 2019, at approximately 12:40 p.m., Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal was shot multiple times while conducting a traffic stop in northwest Harris County. Deputy Dhaliwal was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where he would later succumb to his injuries at 4:03 p.m. He is survived by his father, wife, and three children.

Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal was hired at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in January of 2009 as a detention officer. A year later, Deputy Dhaliwal enrolled in the Reserve Basic Peace Officer Course BR1-10 where he would later be deputized and graduate to the rank of patrol deputy. He was assigned to District 5, or northwest Harris County where he would stay the rest of his career. In 2015, Deputy Dhaliwal received permission to wear his turban and beard in keeping with his Sikh religious faith, paving the way for others to do the same. In 2017, Deputy Dhaliwal led a very successful effort by United Sikhs of America to collect and distribute aid to those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. He also traveled to Puerto Rico on a post-hurricane aid mission.

Deputy Dhaliwal’s teammates describe him as being a vibrant and energetic deputy. He was known for his sense of humor and his ability to make personal connections with his fellow deputies and with the community he served.

Deputy Dhaliwal is the 45th Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy to die in the line of duty.

I saw a picture on the back of a semi truck in honor of Deputy Dhaliwal and glad I did. Reading about his wholesome leadership and change for others is impressive. To his wife and children, he is remembered in Arizona. 🤍

Title: Remembering a Fallen Brother

I never personally knew Dep. Dhaliwal, but his loss nevertheless resonates personally to me. As an immigrant of Yugoslav origin, in May of 2009 I also became the first of my people to take up the badge in my jurisdiction, and swear an oath to defend the US Constitution and the Laws of the State of Georgia. By all accounts and testimony of Dep. Dhaliwal's dedication to duty and his love for his community, he was a man I would have been proud to call a brother and a colleague.

Title: Miss you my brother

Sandeep, It’s many great things I could say about you and I could go on and on. I have many great memories of you, but your friendship and willingness to help everyone stand out the most. You loved your wife and kids more than anything and I always remember you talking about your kids. We would always go and eat at Bullritos and Chick-Fil-A together. You always gave me great advice and showed great compassion to others. The day I heard the bad news my heart immediately broke and I was sad as heck. I couldn’t even think straight for like two days. I pray your family is doing well.
